I want to give you something you can do right now that will completely transform your life. It’s something so easy, so simple, and such a no-brainer when you stop to think about it, but it is something that comes right before every “ah-hah!” moment you’ve had in your life.
It’s really easy, but we forget to do it all the time.
Before I tell you the trick, let me tell you how I discovered this trick.
I came to this realization quite by accident while bowling. After I started doing it (which meant I did it multiple times in a game), my success rate went up and my heart rate and blood pressure went down. This ‘ah-hah!’ moment was then reinforced during a caregiver retreat I attended through the Wounded Warrior Project where we were taught how to do it during one of our sessions. I also noticed it was the first thing that changed when my husband’s PTSD started kicking in, and the first thing we recommended to our developmentally-delayed son when he started losing control and became overwhelmed with sensory overload.
The trick is to breathe. Not just in-and-out breathing that your body naturally does, but to breathe deeply and into your gut. You want to take in a deep, cleansing breath that calms you down and centers you. You want this breath to be so deep that it shuts off all the crazy thoughts in your brain. (Those are the kind of thoughts that I equate to having crazy squirrels scampering around inside my head.)
You need to shut off all your thoughts when you take in that deep level of calmness.
- It connects you to your body,
- it shuts you up,
- it gets you centered, and
- it allows you to connect to your intuition which is where all your big answers to all the problems in your life are.
The many benefits of deep breathing include a reduction in stress and blood pressure, strengthening of abdominal and intestinal muscles and relief of general body aches and pains. Deep breathing also promotes better blood flow, releases toxins from the body and aids in healthy sleep. These benefits result in an increased energy level without ever spending a day in the gym.
The secret is simply to breathe, deeply and often. Make it a habit and remember to do it all day long.
I promise, it will change your life radically and you can get started now. Remember –Keep your head above the water, but don’t forget to breathe.
